Three
Mistakes
09/26/08
Today is friday
and I pretend to be more short in this
LEP-Nuts.
Huh... that sounds terrible! There
are 3 mistakes in the phrase above. What are
they?
Let's
briefly spot some
common mistakes in English: (this is basic stuff, but many
people still get confused! So, let's
review!)
1)
friday = days of the week are always written with capital letters
(Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday,
Thursday). So, it should be Friday. (but it's Friday,
isn't?)
2)
pretend = 'to pretend' is a verb that means "simulate,
present a false image or appearance". The correct here
should be "I intend to be...." - what means
"I have the
intention of
being..."
3)
more short = the correct way to use a comparative form with
short adjectives is by adding "er" in the end of the word,
and not the word "more". "Shorter" is the correct form.
Outros
exemplos:
mais
calmo, calmer (not more calm);
mais
rápido, faster (not more fast)
mais
agradável, nicer (not more nice)
But:
tranquil = more tranquil (not
tranquiler)
rapid = more rapid
pleasant = more
pleasant
Como
regra, apenas os adjetivos com uma ou duas sílabas levam o
sufixo "er". Porém, até mesmo alguns com duas sílabas são
considerados longos, e não levam mais o "er", como "common"
(comum). É "mais
comum" ver "more common" do que
"commoner".
That's enough for
now!
After all, I was
not pretending
to be
shorter today, I was really
intending to be!
Oh,
yeah!!! Here is the riddle you got in your
email:
"In our calendar
some months have 30 days and some months have 31 days. How
many months have 28 days?"
and
the answer is: all of them!
