Vocabulary and Expressions at the International Airport

This Nuts is about a few English words and expressions we use at international  airports. If you are travelling international for the first time, especially if your English is not that sharp, you'd better know - in English! - what you want and where you want to go when you first land in foreign territory.

Por exemplo, você acaba de aterrizar in Chicago e precisa agora passar pela imigração, pegar suas malas, passar na alfândega e achar a saída do aeroporto. Está tudo sinalizado, e tem sempre muitos funcionários aptos e de boa vontade para ajudar (na maioria das vezes!), com apenas um porém: você precisa entender a sinalização e conseguir se expresssar em inglês e entender o que ouve. The rest is a walk in the park (= a piece of cake!) 

 

Começando no avião - embora os atendentes de bordo falem a língua origem e destino da sua viagem, é sempre bom saber a versão em inglês. Primeiro, lembre-se que não é mais comum dizer "stewardness" para "aeromoça". Não é incorreto, porém atualmente usa-se mais "flight attendant", o que não define o sexo dos atendentes, podendo ser usado tanto para aeromoças como para aeromoços!  (How cute!) 

 

Flight attendants will ask you if you want "chicken or beef" or "chicken or pasta" for dinner. You know that, right? And for breakfast if you ask for coffee, they will ask you "cream and sugar?" - cream is "creme de leite", usually drank in the coffee. If you like milk in your coffee, go for cream. It's just a little bit and it tastes good! If, like me, you prefer plain coffee - no sugar and no milk or cream, just ask "black coffee, please!" Black coffee is the way to say "café puro, sem nada misturado". Remember to use the magic words "please" and "thank you". It helps a lot!! 

 

No aeroporto: você desembarca e segue o fluxo - e as placas de sinalização. DICA IMPORTANTE: OBSERVE TUDO À SUA VOLTA!  Pela observação você aprende o que fazer, como se comportar, o que falar e o que não falar. Lembre-se do velho ditado, "Once in Rome, be a Roman" 

 

After landing in foreign land your first stop is at the Immigration. They will check your passaport, your Visa, your finger prints. It's all fine - be calm and remember no one is going to eat you! They are all people, and they are all working in their boring jobs. Just that! Be nice and polite to them, and you will receive the same treatment. Also be smart, don't fool around, pay attention to signs, rules, and OBSERVE what's going on. Some employees in the security department don't have much patience with travellers who don't pay attention to the flow. If you don't quite understand the directions in the loud speakers, read all the signs you can put your eyes on, and pay triple attention to what people do, so you can go with the flow. 

 

Na Imigração, se você é um turista ou está viajando a negócios, pegue a fila para Foreigners - a outra é para Citzens and Legal Residents.  

 

After Immigration has checked your status, you go to Bagagge Claim para pegar suas malas - e se você tiver uma conexão siga as sinalizações para Connecting Flights. 

 

Conveyor Belts = esteiras dos carrosseis (Carousel = onde rolam as bagagens). 

 

Before landing, the crew at the airplane will inform in which carousel the baggage for that flight will be. Keep your ears open! If you can't catch a word, read the electronic information when you are inside the airport. Those are monitors informing the number of your flight and in which carousel the baggage is. 

  

Talvez você precise de carrinhos para suas malas. Em muitos aeroportos americanos (não sei se em todos, pois não conheço todos!) os carrinhos são pagos.

Certo de que pegou sua própria bagagem? Then, head to the Customs Declaration -Alfândega  - and you may also see signs in Spanish "Aduana". Você entrega ao funcionário seu formulário de "nada a declarar" (Nothing to Declare) já preenchido no avião, ou, se você tem algo a declarar, vai para a outra fila.

Regional Buses 

Shuttles (minivans usually from and to airports and hotels, downtown, etc) 

Taxi / Cabs 

 

Parking Lot (estacionamento) 

 

And if you have someone waiting for you to pick you up, you will have the meeting place pre-arranged with this person. If you need to make a phone call from a paid phone you will need coins. It used to be 25 cents for a phone call, I am not sure if the inflation has hit the phones, too. It's good to have some coins hanging around in your pocket. When you dial a number here, from a land line phone (private or public) you have to use the code 1 plus the area code of the destination call. Then the phone number.
