Around
the
clock
11/04/08
Dear
readers,
I
hope you all have had a great weekend! Mine was pretty busy
and I've been
working around-the-clock
to deliver
what Live English
Program promises: English education
and some fun! ;-)
Halloween was fun...(have you seen the
pictures
?)
but I admit the LEP-Nuts last week were a little too
long, weren't they? But now, you admit too that the
subject was very interesting and colorful, don't you?
And if you read the articles you probably learned a LOT
of things! There was no way to write just a little bit!
;-)
Today I'll be short, though! Just want to
explain the expression "around-the-clock". This is an
idiom (expresssão
idiomática) very common here in the USA. The
meaning is: "something that happens every day and night".
Normally it is used as a hyperbole, that is, an exageration
for emphasis! Like I said
above "I've been working
'around-the-clock'..." - it's an exageration, of course,
because I also stop to eat, to sleep, to go to the
bathroom, right? ;-)
Exemplos de como usar a
expressão:
"Those security guards have
worked around-the-clock
after the bank was
robbed."
Aqueles seguranças
têm trabalhado noite e dia/sem parar, depois que o banco
foi roubado.
"My
work requires around-the-clock
dedication and
creativity."
Meu trabalho requer
dedicação e criatividade constantes/sem fim/ininterruptas,
etc
That's it for now! You have been
studying around-the-clock
lately! Haven't you?
:-}
Have
a great week!
Have
questions about this LEP-Nuts or other English issue?
