The Cat's Meow! (and other slangs*)

Do you have pets? Dogs, cats?  What do you do when they are pissing you off¹?

Well, one of my cats today is driving me nuts² with this non-stop meowing. I just had to lock him in the basement so I can concentrate and write your LEP-Nuts.

Thanks to my cat's behavior and need of attention, today we'll talk about "the cat's meow".

Take a look at these examples:

The party last night was the cat's meow!

She was wearing exotic red high heels that were the cat's meow!

 

The cat's meow, in this sense, is figurative - not the real meow, as you noticed. It's a slang and means "something fine, really cool!" - Well... exactly the opposite of the real cat's meow, which is not fine and cool at all!!

 

Next week we'll talk about this apostrophe hanging on the cat. Some English students have difficulties with the apostrophe, when to use it or not.  For example, do you know the difference between this two sentences?

• This is the cat's toy I told you.
  
• This is the cat toy I told you.

*Other slangs used here:

(Como dizer em inglês "encher o saco", "isto está me enlouquecendo", e "fique ligado")

¹ pissing you off = to piss someone off is to make someone angry. Be careful when using "piss" - it's a slang for "urinate", too! 

² driving me nuts = to drive someone nuts is the same as to cause someone to be crazy, irritated.

³ stay tuned = stay tuned is the same as to say "pay attention to", "be connected to ..."
