Sensible, Sensitive, Deception...

False Friends for Portuguese Speakers

 

How would you translate these phrases?

• The controls of a jet plane are very sensitive.
  
  Os controles de um jato são muito sensitivos.  ( )  Yes  ( ) No

• Mary é sensível ao polén.

Mary is sensible to polen. ( )  Yes  ( ) No

• Aquele filme foi uma decepção!

That movie was a deception!  ( )  Yes  ( ) No

Se você diria "Yes" para qualquer uma dessas traduções, tsc, tsc, tsc... Precisamos praticar mais falsos cognatos!   ;-P

The correct translations should be:

• Os controles de um jato são muito sensíveis.
• Mary is sensitive to polen.
• That movie was a disappointment!

SENSIBLE means reasonable, rational, wise, able to perceive. Ex: I know you are sensible enough to not jump from that cliff! (Sei que você é racional/sábio/sensato o suficiente para não pular daquele penhasco).

SENSITIVE means "easily affected; subjected to influences; fragile". Uma pessoa que sofre influências ou se impressiona com filmes, or com notícias, com o que outros falam,  etc, is "sensitive".  Pessoas que são afetadas por alergias, por exemplo, they are sensitive to dust, polen, wheat, etc...

DECEPTION means fraud, misleading act, the act of making someone believing in something that is not true. Ex: "That was a deception! They said the movie was a comedy and it actually was a drama!"  (Foi um logro (um engano)! Disseram que o filme era uma comédia e na verdade foi um drama!). Mas se você quer dizer que o filme foi uma decepção, than use the word "disappoitment".

I had this big disillusion (disappointment - not deception) with an old friend. I shouldn't care, because she was not a very sensible (rational) person anyway. But I'm still sensitive (touchy, affected, ofendend) about the whole thing.

In English, those words that seem like words in your first language but are not the same, are called "false friends" ou "false cognates". Be careful about them! You can put yourself in embarrasing situations if you don't know all your false friends!

Só para ilustrar uma situação embaraçosa: li uma história que a empresa de canetas Parker (Parker Pen Company), tentando traduzir o slogan deles para o espanhol, se embaraçou de fato. Veja o que eles fizeram: o slogan em inglês era "It won't leak in your pocket and embarrass you." (A caneta que não vai vazar no seu bolso e fazer você passar vergonha/ou deixar você embaraçado). Well... the translator to the Spanish language must have got his degree in a cereal box! He (or she) translated "embarrass" to " embarazar" - "Embarazar" em espanhol significa "to get pregnant" (engravidar). Assim, o slogan ficou: "A caneta que não vaza no seu bolso e não engravida você." 

So, don't be embarrassed if you make a confusion every now and then, but remember: it's always better to know better! Be aware of false cognates!
