Fun or Funny?

 

Have you ever been confused about FUN and FUNNY?

 

Qual a diferença entre fun e funny? Como dizer em inglês "Divirta-se!"?

Estude estes exemplos:

FUN:

• You are a fun person! Actually, everybody in this group is fun!

Você é uma pessoa divertida/agradável! Na verdade, todos neste grupo são divertidos!

fun = (adj.) - enjoyable, amusing, entertaining

 

• This is pure fun! It's more fun than riding a horse! We are having so much fun skydiving!

Isto é pura diversão! É mais diversão (ou é mais divertido) do que andar a cavalo/cavalgar. Estamos nos divertindo tanto saltando de paraquedas!

Nossas férias foram divertidas/agradáveis!

fun = (noun) - entertainment, pleasure, amusement.

 

         FUNNY:

• Shelly is a funny girl. (adj)

Shelly é uma garota engraçada.

 

• This is really funny! Do it again!

Isso é muito engraçado!  Faz de novo!

 

funny = (adj) - what causes laughter; ridiculous; joyful; cheerful; playful.

 

What about the comparative forms?

Qual é correto: "more fun" ou "funnier"?

 

Se o comparativo está no substantivo (fun), it's more fun, like you would say more food, more clothes, more work...

 

Skydiving is more fun than I thought!

 

Se o comparativo está no adjetivo (funny), it's funnier , like you would say happier, faster, hungrier...

 

Sally has always been funnier than her brother, but he got the job as a comedian.

 

Basic stuff for some, hard to understand for others...

 

FUN = is a noun - diversão (we all had fun); and it can be an adjective too (we had a fun experience = tivemos uma experiência divertida)

FUNNY = is an adjective - Clowns are funny! - engraçado, ridículo (que faz rir), jocoso (Wow! De onde desenterrei esta palavra? ahaha! Mas ainda existe!)

 

Em português, o que melhor define a diferença entre fun e funny  é a noção entre "engraçado" e "agradável" .

Nem tudo que é agradável é engraçado. "Fun" é diversão, prazer / agradável, divertido, prazeroso, mas não necessariamente "engraçado". Não precisa ter alguém contando piada ou fazendo palhaçadas para ser "fun". Se tiver, daí é "funny".

Você está na praia, having fun (divertindo-se, passando umas horas agradáveis). Aparece um sujeito fantasiado à sua frente, que começa a dançar a dança do elefante e contar piadas. He is funny! Você, rindo tanto com as graças do sujeito, pensa: "What a funny situation, meeting such a clown on the beach!"
