"Gazillion" -
Gíria
10/14/09
Have you heard the slang "gazillion/s" ?
Do you know what it means?
Read this
joke:
"A Blonde is watching the news with her
husband when the newscaster says,"Two Brazilian men die in
a skydiving accident."
The blonde starts crying to
her husband, sobbing she says, "That's horrible!!!
So
many men
dying that way!"
Confused, he says, "Yes dear,
it is sad, but they were skydiving, and there is always
that risk involved."
After a few minutes, the
blonde, still sobbing, says, "Yes,
but...how
many is
a Brazilian?"
Now I'll explain, and then you read the
joke again and it'll make more sense.
The blond woman obviously does not know
what the word "Brazilian" means and she confused it with
"gazillion" - gazillion means a huge number of
something.
Para um número
grande e indeterminado, em português dizemos "n" - Tenho
"n" motivos para estudar inglês pela internet! Não dizemos
"n" em inglês. We can say
"... numerous reasons to..." , or "I have
gazilions of reasons to study English online!" -
gazillions
really means A
LOT!!
The blond heard "Brazilians" and she
thought about a "large amount" (like "gazillions") , that's
why she cries, thinking that "a huge number of men died"
(that would be really sad! I'd cry, too!
) -
That's why she asks how many is a
Brazilian.
Então, qual é a
real quantidade de um gazillion?
How much is a
gazillion? There
isn't a number! It's
uncontable, like "zillion". It's a made-up
term.
Now you know!!!
Dúvidas?
