Guy Friend and Boyfriend are the same thing?
09/13/10

Some groups of people say that the 'guy friend' is a girl's male friend who listens to her crying about another guy, her (ex-)lover, for example. In essence, the guy friend is just a good male friend, no more than that.

I believe this variation (guy friend) was born to distinguish the male friend from a boyfriend. Because if you are speaking and you refer to your male friend as "my boy friend", your interlocutor may understand he is your boyfriend. To avoid misunderstandings we can use guy friend.

Same thing about 'gal friend'. If I am talking about a girl friend, I'd better refer to her as my gal friend, to avoid misunderstanding about her being my girlfriend.

So:

gal friend, girl friend =>  female friend  (not girlfriend)

guy friend, boy friend => male friend    (not boyfriend)
