Hoje é feriado aqui nos Estados
Unidos! E como não fui viajar, estou trabalhando! E como
LEP é também cultura e informação, aqui vai um
pouco da história deste feriado. Afinal, aprender um
idioma não é só
vocabulário e
gramática, é também conhecer a forma como um povo
vive. É aprendendo mais sobre um povo
e seu modo
de pensar e agir, que passamos a incorporar a
linguagem desse povo de forma mais
dinâmica.

Day
This is a
long weekend because today we are celebrating
Memorial Day.
Memorial Day is
a homage to all U.S. men and women who died while in the
military service. Many
Americans visit
cemeteries and memorials on this day, and many people
also use Memorial Day to honor other
people who
have died. A national moment of remembrance takes
place at 3 p.m. Eastern Time.
Memorial Day was
formerly known as Decoration Day. It first received this
name when the freed slaves,
in 1868,
decorated with flowers the Union graveyard, where
they formerly had buried their dead (Union
soldiers who died in captivity). Union
soldiers and freed blacks paraded from that area,
followed by patriotic
singing and
a picnic.
Only in 1971 the
Decoration Day was changed by the United States Congress
from its traditional May 30th
to the last
Monday in May, and officially became Memorial
Day.
As a tradition,
we fly the American flag at half-staff from dawn
until noon local time. (Half-staff or
half-mast describes a flag flying approximately
halfway up a flagpole or ship's mast - it can be
anywhere from one-third to two-thirds of the way on the pole.
This is done in many countries as a symbol of respect,
mourning, or distress). The parades are also a
tradition, and so are the picnics with barbecues, family
gatherings, and sporting events. This three-day
weekend is considered for many Americans the
unofficial beginning of summer -
it's usually
the first holiday in the year when we can
"finally" enjoy nice and warm weather! No
doubt it's a great time for barbecues and parties! (With
all due respect to our fallen
soldiers!)
Now, if you
excuse me, I am heading downtown Rockford to watch a
Memorial Day parade! I'll post a
couple of

shots!
