Como dizer em inglês: "Perdi a oportunidade de...."
 

I hope you haven't missed many good opportunities... but if you ever have to say that, note that we don't say "I lost the opportunity." The verb "to lose" (past tense, lost) is used in contexts related to the lack of something you already had, mostly possessions

You can lose your keys. Or lose your marbles... (normally the second comes first!). And then, lose your temper! All things you already had!

But you miss the opportunity ... Have you ever missed the train? See, we don't "lose" the train, because the train is not ours.  It's not our possession to lose it.

Em inglês, o trem e as oportunidades, nós deixamos passar, mas não perdemos porque não são coisas que possuímos

Remember: the antonym of "to lose" is "to find" (perder / encontrar). If in a given context you can't use "to find" (or "to recover") then you can't use "to lose".

Example:

"I lost the movie yesterday." or "I missed the movie yesterday" ? 

Se eu perdi o DVD que continha o filme, "I lost the movie".

Se eu perdi a oportunidade de assistir ao filme, é porque bobeei, deixei passar, então ..."I missed the movie ..."

Clear?
