Como
dizer em inglês: "Perdi a oportunidade
de...."

I hope you haven't
missed many good opportunities... but
if you ever have to say that, note that we don't say "I
lost the opportunity." The verb
"to
lose" (past
tense, lost) is used in contexts related
to possession, or lack of it, in this
sense.
You can lose your keys. Or lose
your marbles... (normally the second comes
first!)
But you
miss the opportunity ... Have you
ever missed the train? See, we don't
"lose" the train, because the train is not
ours. It's not our possession to lose
it.
Remember: the antonym of
"to lose" is "to find"
(perder / encontrar). If in a given context you can't
use "to find", then you can't use "to
lose".
Example:
You can't say
"I lost the train." because you wouldn't say "I
found the train" - A menos,
claro, que você tivesse de fato perdido, ou
encontrado um trem perdido. O "perder o trem" (ou
perder a
oportunidade) tem aqui a
forma figurada de "deixar passar...", e não
"perder no sentido oposto de
encontrar".
I lost the
movie yesterday. Right? Wrong!
Só se eu tivesse perdido o DVD.
Se eu perdi a oportunidade de assistir ao filme, é
porque bobeei, deixei passar, então
..."I
missed the movie ..."

losing things there, because sometimes they are hard
