Como pedir "uma porção" (no barzinho)?

How do you say in English: "Uma porção de batatas fritas, por favor?"

 

Vc sabia que in the UK they call "chips"  what we call in America "French Fries"? 

 

So, if you are in England, or in any other country where they speak Brit English, and you feel like ordering French fries, say "chips".  Also, "egg and chips" are the staple food in England, along with "porridge" (mingau) -- (so I was told!).  

 

Assista o filme Shirley Valentine e observe um pouco da cultura inglesa, and how the character Joe wants his "egg and chips" on Tuesdays! It's a great and funny movie!  Tire a legenda e tente pegar toda a conversa em inglês britânico!  Oh, boy... it's hard, but worth doing it!  :-) 

 

Now, remember:  "uma porção de batatas, camarão, queijo, etc...."  is NOT a "portion"  when we are ordering it in a restaurant. We say: 

 

"An order of Frech fries, please [or chips (Brit), cheese, shrimp, etc, etc...]" 

 

And, besides the fact that  "água com gás" is technically "carbonated water" , we usually order it as "sparkling water".  But if you prefer  "still water", like me, simply say "water". In the States it's common to receive a glass of water and have refills during your dinner. It's free, but is "tap water", not "bottled mineral water". For bottled water you must pay. (Of course, I prefer beer with an order of French fries!)  :-p
