Persons ou People? Qual a forma correta de plural?

É comum aprender na escola que, em inglês, singular de 'pessoa' é 'person', e plural é 'people'. Essa é a regra. E a exceção, você também aprendeu?

 

 

 

Por que algumas placas de sinalização e alguns documentos, dizem "persons" em vez de "people"?

Aqui vai o que muitos professores não nos ensinaram: persons pode ser usado como plural de person, em documentos e contextos formais. Por isso aparece também em placas, como essa da figura acima, que incentiva a carona entre pessoas conhecidas.  Quer saber mais sobre carpool?

 

When I first saw a road sign for carpool I was puzzled. Why do they say "persons" in the plural form if it should be "people" - 2 or more people, right? That's how we learned in school!  I was intrigued! I didn't know the answer!  So I looked for one!

 

By living in the USA I'm having the opportunity to discover things that teachers and schools never tell us! And that's why I created Live English Program - for all the other students who, like me in the past, don't have a source of "live English" - I mean, "alive, current". Why don't they teach certain things is school? I don't know! But here I am to help you with things that usually are not in the regular books and I have learned by experience.
