Rodízio de Carros, Rodízio de Pizza

Como dizer em inglês "rodízio de carros" e "rodízio de pizza"?

LEP subscriber Angela asked me these questions a couple of weeks ago. They are good questions and I suppose that, like her, many of you would also like to know the answers.

So here they are:

rodízio de carros = is a regulation adopted by many Brazilian cities by which you cannot drive your car in a specific day of the week, given that the number in your license plate matches that day of the week.  The measurement is supposed to minimize pollution and traffic. Esta é a explicação que você pode dar em inglês, caso alguém te pergunte o que é "rodízio de carros".

There is no name for that in English just because this practice DOES NOT EXIST in the USA, as far as I know. That would be totally un-American!

We do have "carpools" - a car pool is not a law, it's just a community practice and it's encouraged by environmentalists and local authorities, who created this project called "Ride Share" or "Rideshare". It's a totally voluntary incentive to share rides, where one drives and the friends and neighbors, co-workers, etc, go along as passengers. Therefore, saving gas.  But it's really not related to "rodízio de carros".

rodizio de pizza =  we don't quite have those "rodízios" here in the States, either, like we have in Brazil (with waiters passing by and stopping at your table with such a variety of food - meat, pizza or other). The most similar style we have here is called "All You Can Eat". It's more like the "self-service" we use to see in Brazil, but here we don't say self-service, we say "All You Can Eat".   There is a buffet in the restaurant, where the  food is displayed and guests can serve themselves as much as they want. But no waiters going from table to table. This system is not common here for pizza.  Pizza Hut has recently started doing that, but one cannot expect to find there the same variety and style we can find in Brazilian pizzarias, or pizzerias.

 

So, take advantage of the day you are free to drive your own car and go to a great Brazilian pizzeria!  Enjoy "all you can eat"!
