Santa Claus - a Bit of
History
12/23/10
De onde vem essa imagem, besides coming from the North Pole, in a sleigh
pulled by eight reindeer?
Santa Claus que conhecemos hoje é o resultado da
combinação da figura religiosa de St. Nicholas, cujas características físicas foram modificadas por vários artistas ao
longo dos anos, com o personagem alegre, rechonchudo,
in those red-and-white winter clothes, trabalhando com
elfos numa officina no Polo Norte. De lá,
ele viaja num trenó puxado por oito renas, para entregar presentes às criaças de todo o mundo, na noite de
Natal.
"The Civil War cartoonist Thomas Nast drew Santa
Claus for Harper's Weekly in 1862; Santa was shown as a small elf-like figure who supported the Union. Nast continued to draw Santa
for 30 years and along the way
changed the color of his coat from tan to the now traditional red. Though
some people believe the
Coca-Cola Santa wears red because that is the Coke® color, the red suit comes
from Nast's interpretation of
St. Nick." ¹
So say some sources (see below for more references on
this subject), that in 1931 Coca-Cola company was looking for ways to increase the sales of their soft drink during
winter. They contracted an illustrator named Haddon Sundblom, who drew the figure of Santa associated to
Coca-Cola.

"However, the modern version of Santa Claus was not created by Coca-Cola. Sundblom's illustrations were
based upon what had already become the standard image of Santa, as noted in a New York Times article published
in 1927, four years before the appearance of Sundblom's first Santa-based Coca-Cola ad."
²
"All this isn't to say that Coca-Cola didn't have
anything to do with cementing the modern image of Santa Claus in the public consciousness. Coke's annual
advertisements featuring Sundblom-drawn Santas holding bottles of Coca-Cola, drinking Coca-Cola, receiving
Coca-Cola as gifts, and enjoying Coca-Cola became a perennial Christmastime feature which helped spur Coca-Cola
sales throughout the winter (and produced the bonus effect of appealing quite strongly to children, an
important segment of the soft drink market). In an era before the advent of television, before color motion
pictures became common, and before the widespread use of color in newspapers, Coca-Cola's magazine
advertisements, billboards, and point-of-sale store displays were for many Americans their primary exposure to
themodern Santa Claus image." ²
