Vocabulário: "traduce" não tem a tradução que parece!

This morning as I was flipping through the pages of the Websters's and I found the word TRADUCE /trəˈdu:s, Brit trəˈdju:s /.  Its definition is: to slander.  "Great!"  I thought, "this is not easy for foreigners if they don't know what slander is." And I didn't know either!  So... I flipped back to SLANDER and there I found: /sləndər/ = 1. the utterance of a falsehood that demages another's reputation 2. such a spoken statement - vt. to utter a slander about; slanderer, n; slanderous, adj.

 

Caso você seja um beginner, talvez  utterance and falsehood sejam palavras ainda desconhecidas. Mas... take it easy... it's a process. Keep going!

 

That inspired me to write this Nuts!   Why? Well, first because I am a little nuts  with words, and second because I know how hard it is for beginners (it may not be your case anymore) to understand an English-English dictionary.  But ALL EFL students (English as a Foreign Language students) go through such difficulty, at least once (to be optimistic) in the early stages of their learning process.

 

Como você deve ter percebido, "traduce" e "slander" são sinônimos and they mean "calumny, defamation". They can be used as noun, or a verb.  Aposto que você conseguiu entender o significado das palavras, mesmo sem a tradução para o português. Simplesmente pelo uso de outras palavras na definição.

 

A dica é: persista na compreensão do inglês, em inglês. E não confunda : traduce com traduzir ou tradução; e slander com sl ender.  Sle nder, with "e" means long and thing; slim, scant. 

 

To say she is fat and ugly is a slandar /slændər /! She is really very slender /'slendər/  and greaceful!

If any one tells you that such a person speaks ill of you, do not make excuses about what is said of you, but answer: "He was ignorant of my other faults, else he would not have mentioned these alone."

• Onde e como poderíamos colocar a palavra "slander" ou "traduce" de forma que, modificando a frase,  teríamos o mesmo sentido?
