"Vou": I go or I will?

I keep receiving these interesting emails from LEP members and here is one question from D.N, from Montes Claros, Minas Gerais. She often writes funny and beautiful essays, and her English is very good, but she still had this question: "How to say 'vou errar'? Is it  'I go make a mistake'?"

You may know this already, and I've already replied to her, individually, but many people may still be confused about future tense when they think in Portuguese. This is a common thing, and can (and should) be fixed to avoid clunky constructions in English. 

  

Here is the drill: when you are facing sentences like that think about the main action in the future, and forget about "going somewhere" (unless, of course, you are really going somehwere!) 

  

Remember this:  

 

Vou errar ...  Vou estudar... Vou contar... este  "vou" não   tem o sentido de locomoção de um ponto A para um ponto B. Portanto não podemos usar em inglês o verbo ir / go.  Neste tipo de construção não estamos "indo" a nenhum lugar. Este "vou" é apenas o verbo auxiliar nesta locução verbal em português. (vou fazer = farei).  

 

So, in English we use the 'will' auxiliary + the action (vou comer = I will eat).  

  

   

Agora, pense em português:    " Vou comprar um carro."   

 

Now, in Portuglês:                           "I go buy a car"    (bad, bad English!) 

 

Then, in English:         "I will buy a car."   OR  "I will go buy  a car"? 

 

                                               Yes!             and                Yes! 

 

Both are correct! Mas qual a diferença entre as duas formas, e quando usar uma e quando usar a outra? 

 

When you say: 

 

I' ll buy a car = você está dizendo que irá comprar um carro. Futuro indeterminado.  

 

I' ll go  buy a car = você está dizendo que irá a algum lugar (car dealer, perhaps) comprar um carro. Há locomoção no futuro, além do futuro de comprar um carro.  

 

Can you see the difference? 

 

Essa sutil diferença não existe em português. Seria o equivalente a dizer: 

 

Vou ir compar um carro - o que é um pleonasmo vicioso dos feios! Ou "irei comprar um carro", o que também é redundante e não acrescenta nada à frase, pois pode-se simplesmente dizer "comprarei um carro" ou, mais informalmente, "vou comprar um carro".    

 

 

Of course, if you are going somewhere indeed, you need to use "go".  

 

Eu vou  ao cinema amanhã.  

I will go to the movies tomorrow.  (yes, future locomotion  )  

 

Às quartas-feiras eu  vou  ao shopping para jantar.  

Every  Wednesday  I go  to the mall to have dinner (yes, locomotion  - but present tense.) 

 

   

Bottom line:  to express action in the future use will + verb. Only use "will go + another verb"  if there is locomotion from point A to point B.
