Qual a semelhança entre ferro fundido e dramaturgo?

Have you ever stopped to think why "escritor de peça teatral" is "playwright" and not "play writer"?  As a writer myself, I have asked such question... 

 

I've been wondering about the interesting aspects of English. For example, the similarity between "playwright" and  "wrought iron"...

 

"Wright" is another word for "artisan, artist, the one who creates and artistically  shapes something".  So, the artist who creates or write a drama (a play for the theater) is a "playwright" and not a "play writer" (although, the latter seems to me to make more sense!).   If you say "play writer", though, it will be understood; it's just not common.

 

What about  "ferro fundido"?  "Wrought iron" follows the same "artistic" principle: "wrought" [rɔːt] is an adjective derived from the word "wright" [raɪt]   and it means "feito ou criado artisticamente, torneado; fundido". 

 

According to the Websters', it's old-fashioned for "torneado", but here is how to use it:

 

"I have an exquisite wrought woodwork table in my living room

and wrought iron handrails."

       

"Tenho uma lindíssima mesa de madeira torneada em minha sala

e corrimãos de ferro fundido."

 

 

 

Well, now you know!  The wright creates wrought  pieces.
